The reason why I use anaerobic training over conventional cardio (aerobic training) is that it works much better because of how it requires the body to adapt metabolically—your body is forced to burn through fat immediately to sustain the level of intensity being asked of it because of the energy pathway being used.
It ya slso elevates energy use for more than 24 hours post-workout. In other words, your metabolism goes into a “heightened state” of activity which has a profound effect on fat loss.
In fact it has been scientifically proven that the metabolism can stay in it’s heightened state burning calories, and shredding fat for up to 24 hours after you workout, post interval training!
This is why you will never see any of my clients performing steady state cardio on a regular bases.
Don’t all forms of cardio burn fat?
Aerobic training burns carbohydrates first. It also activates pathways of energy slower in production that are degrading to muscle and will increase the production of cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that can overwhelm tissue, having a catabolic effect that leads to gradual muscle loss and fat gain. By doing constant aerobic training without strength training, you will lose muscle, lower your metabolic, rate, and are more likely to gain fat. High cortisol causes chronic inflammation, which can also lead to belly fat gain over time.
High output anaerobic exercise such as weight lifting, sprinting, sled pushing and interval training will burn a far greater percentage of fat, enhance the body’s production of enzymes involved in fat breakdown, and activate pathways that lead to muscle development. This type of exercise also elevates growth hormone a powerful fat burning hormone that helps restore tissue and build muscle.
My strenght training philosophy
I believe that exercise selection is key to any successful workout regime. I focus on the “biggest bang for your buck”, multi joint exercises first, such as: squats, deadlifts, lunges, split squats, step-ups, chin-ups, and chest presses . I prioritize these movements first then add other compound and isolation exercises as I see fit to develop weaknesses and hone strengths.
